The Top 10 Least Trainable Dog Breeds

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Nobody likes to think of their dog as stupid. In all honesty, no dog is really stupid in the human sense. What we are looking at here is how easy a dog is to train.

All the dogs below, for the job they were bred for, are certified geniuses. Their skills have been finally honed over 100s if not 1000s of years of selective evolution.

Dog intelligence is a very subjective topic and many experts over the years have tried different ways to put together lists to summarise it.

Stanley Coren PhD is a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia, and a recognised world expert in Human-Dog interactions. In his book “The Intelligence of Dogs” he uses his vast knowledge and research to rank all the major dog breeds in order of how easy they are to train. So here they are, the top 10 least trainable dog breeds in the world (with number 1 being the least trainable of all):

Ranking of Dogs for Obedience and Working Intelligence
1. Afghan Hound
2. Basenji
3. Bulldog
4. Chow Chow
5. Borzoi
6. Bloodhound
7. Pekingese
8. Beagle Mastiff
9. Basset Hound
10. Shih Tzu

Don’t be disheartened if your dog is on this list. I have met individuals from all these breeds and we were able to do lots of wonderful training, creating obedient pets. Sometimes however we have to accept limitations of what we can do, based on the dog’s particular quirks.

For example, Bloodhounds and Beagles are often hard to get as good off lead dogs, because once their nose hits the floor getting their attention is a colossal task.

If you want to do lots of high-level training then the other end of the list is probably more for you. If you want a good pet dog though, and dog on this list will make exactly that.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
